Day 1 : Santiago de Chile

Updated: Dec 2, 2023

Just getting to Ushuaia from Tokyo is a journey in itself.

Here we are, this is the first post. We finally landed in Santiago de Chile, after our second 14-hours flight in 3 days. A long-haul with a 2-night transit in Paris but, just the iconic oeuf-mayo at the Le Gourmet des Ternes was worth the stay, and then there was a great teasing moment with a bottle of chilean wine VIK, but that is a different story... So in 72 hours we flew over the North Pole to now head straight towards the South Pole !

The descent towards Santiago is unique and with the Andes mountain range all along the way, it feels like we will land on Tatooine. Los Andes Mountain Range starts in Venezuela until Tierra del Fuego. In Santiago it has an average height of 5000 meters and since Santiago only sits at an altitude of 570m you really feel surrounded by giant mountains.

With 25 degrees on arrival, it's summer again and we go straight to the hotel concierge to book an alfresco dinner at Mestizo in the Bicetenario Park. We take a walk in the city center and the view from the 61st floor of the newly built Sky Costanera Tower showing the mountain range in the backdrop reminds us that Santiago is a uniquely located.

Let's go ! Dinner time...Although it's monday evening, Mestizo gets rapidly crowded with locals and business people and if you go there our fav food pick would be the Tacos de Chocinito Shumado and a glass of Lapostotolle (cabernet Sauvignon)...and also now we understand that after the sun goes down, it gets really chilly in Chile.

Oh! and one more thing..., Santiago is one more city that confirms that only French people seems to be unable to properly behave with electric bike sharing discipline !! After all I think you can really appreciate the greatness of a civilization by the way they treat those electric bikes.

Tomorrow we have one other full day to explore the city, and continue fixing our jetlag.
